Laser Glass Processing Machines: The Buying Guide
A laser does jobs on glass that used to need three separate rooms. Frosting used to mean a sandblasting booth, grit and a wash. Coating removal meant a grinding wheel. Drilling meant a diamond bit, water and a scrap rate. A laser machine does all three on one bed, with no tool touching the glass and, on most of these processes, no consumable to buy.
This guide explains what the machines do, how the laser sources differ, which figures decide the purchase, and what a quote should contain. Every machine named here is listed on GlassMachines.net and supplied factory-direct. No prices appear here. Request pricing from the manufacturer once you know the work area and the process you need.
What a laser glass machine does and where it sits on the line
A laser machine puts energy into a small spot on the glass and controls what happens there. Depending on the source and the settings, it can roughen the surface for a frosted look, burn a coating off, open a hole, score a line for splitting, or write a permanent mark.
Most of these machines sit after cutting and before tempering. That is where holes, cutouts and frosted patterns must be finished, because tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards. Coating removal sits in the same window, since edge deletion has to happen before an insulating unit is sealed or a laminate is assembled. Marking can be placed anywhere the plant wants traceability.
Some machines are built to sit inside a line rather than beside it. In-line Laser Drilling Machine links directly into a production line, Laser Drilling & Cutout Machine has automatic transmission and intelligent positioning so it can be connected the same way, and Vertical Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine stands the sheet upright on an air-flotation platform to save floor space.
- Before the laser: cutting, breakout, washing and edge grinding.
- At the laser: frosting, coating removal, drilling, cutouts, cutting or marking.
- After the laser: washing, tempering, laminating or insulating glass assembly.
- Alongside: dust extraction and water cooling, both of which the machine needs to hold accuracy.
Types and configurations
The laser source is the first split, and it decides which processes you get. Fiber sources cover the workhorse jobs of frosting, coating removal and drilling, at 120, 180 or 200 W on the Gudetech engraving machines. Green and UV sources work cold: Green Laser Sandblasting & Drilling Machine uses a 60 W green laser and is stated to process without edge breakage, and UV Laser Sandblasting Machine uses a 60 W UV source for fine work. Picosecond sources cut rather than mark. Infrared is used by BLM Machinery Glass Laser Cutting, Drilling and Film Removal Equipment, and MOPA pulsed sources by the HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. drilling machines.
The second split is the process the machine is built around. Some combine three processes on one bed, such as Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine V3, which frosts, removes coatings and drills. Others do one job properly: Laser Drilling Machine is drilling only, Orion Laser Tech NV Spider Series is coating removal only, and Orion Laser Tech NV Orca Series is cutting with optional cleaving.
The third split is bed orientation and integration. Horizontal beds are the norm. Vertical Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine and Orion Laser Tech NV Spider Series offer vertical positions that save floor space. HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. Glass Laser Continuous Drilling Machine can take robot arms, a conveyor platform, a CCD vision system and an XY motion platform for a fully automatic line.
The last split is head count, which decides area per hour on marking work. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series runs 1 marker on the Standard, 4 on the Premium and 4, 8 or 12 on the Expert. Laser Drilling & Cutout Machine uses a single beam with a double head.
| Source | What it is used for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber, 120 to 200 W | Frosting, coating removal, drilling | The general-purpose choice |
| Green, 60 W | Cold frosting and drilling | Stated to avoid edge breakage |
| UV, 5 to 60 W | Fine frosting, coating removal, internal engraving | Cold process, small detail |
| Picosecond | Cutting and splitting brittle glass | Non-thermal, very low chipping |
| Infrared | Cutting, drilling, film removal | Used on the BLM Machinery models |
| MOPA pulsed | Drilling without water | Clean hole walls, low chipping |
How it works, step by step
The pattern comes from a drawing, not from a stencil, which is why changing a design costs nothing on a laser. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series is described as tooling free, with no change-over costs between patterns, and it can mix glass types, sizes, coatings and marking shapes in one run.
Cutting works on a different principle. HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. Picosecond Laser Glass Cutting Machine generates high peak power density inside the glass, forms a filament along the cut line and creates micro-cracks, and the sheet is then separated along the planned path using mechanical or thermal stress.
- The drawing is imported. Gudetech machines run AutoCAD, CorelDRAW or type3 and read DXF, AI, SML and JPG files.
- The sheet is loaded and located. Machines with intelligent positioning or a CCD vision system find the true edge instead of trusting the stop.
- The head travels over the glass on a gantry. Rigidity matters, which is why the frames are welded steel, stress-relieved and machined.
- The laser fires in pulses. Frosting roughens the surface, coating removal burns the film off, drilling removes material shot by shot.
- Suction follows the head and pulls the debris away, and water cooling holds the source at temperature.
- The part is checked, then washed if the next step needs a clean surface.
The figures that decide the purchase
Work area is the first figure and it sets the price class. Here it runs from a 150 × 150 mm engraving field on UV Laser Internal Engraving Machine up to 3000 × 6000 mm on Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine V3 and Green Laser Sandblasting & Drilling Machine. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series is stated to handle glass up to jumbo size.
Laser power comes next, and more power is not automatically better. Marking wants a low, controlled figure: Bird-Friendly Laser Marking Machine runs at 35 W. Frosting and drilling want more, at 120, 180 or 200 W on the Gudetech fiber machines.
Accuracy is quoted differently by process. In-line Laser Drilling Machine holds plus or minus 3 micron, Picosecond Glass Cutting & Splitting Machine (Single/Dual Station) holds plus or minus 0.01 mm, and Orion Laser Tech NV Orca Series states plus or minus 5 micron path accuracy. Then read throughput in the unit that matches your work, and check the services: power draw, cooling, dust extraction and machine weight, because a 14 ton machine needs a floor that can take it.
| Figure | Range seen in this category |
|---|---|
| Work area | 150 × 150 mm on internal engraving up to 3000 × 6000 mm on the V3 and Green Laser series |

| Power draw | 7.0 kW on the UT100, 8.5 kW on Laser Drilling Machine, 12 kW on the GLC-1008 |
Choosing by what you produce
Pick the process first, then the size class. Buying a large bed for a small job is the most common way to overspend here.
- Bird-friendly architectural glass. Bird-Friendly Laser Marking Machine marks dots and lines on the outer surface without damaging the coatings beneath, and takes Low-E film placed upward. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series offers more than 40 dot types in straight, staggered, random and line patterns, and is stated to have no impact on glass strength to EN1288-3.
- Insulating glass and low-E work. You need edge deletion and surface decoating. Orion Laser Tech NV Spider Series covers both, in vertical or horizontal position, with up to 5 lasers for higher throughput.
- Shower doors. Holes and cutouts are the whole job. Laser Drilling & Cutout Machine uses a single beam with a double head to drill and cut openings on one platform, and the catalog names shower-room glass as its best fit.
- Decorative and frosted glass. Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine V3 combines frosting, coating removal and drilling on one bed. Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine HOT100 offers the same process set on a stress-relieved welded steel platform, and Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine UT100 does it on a compact 7.0 kW machine.
- Mirrors and smart mirrors. ANHUI MORNSUN INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD. MSF Laser Sandblasting and Etching Machine creates patterns and textures on the back of mirrors, and the same structure removes backpaint and etches stainless steel panels.
- Thin glass for electronics. HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. Picosecond Laser Glass Cutting Machine is aimed at phone screens and tablet panels, with a vacuum platform that holds the workpiece flat.
- Traceability. Automatic Laser Marking Machine from STRON codes each sheet with lines down to 0.01 mm on 2 to 19 mm glass, and Orion Laser Tech NV QR Code Marker is a compact module for permanent, electronically readable marks.
What a quote should include
A laser machine is a machine plus a laser source plus the services that keep the source alive. Ask for every line below in writing.
Then ask these questions. What is the rated life of the laser source, and who supplies a replacement? Is the chiller included and sized for your ambient temperature? Is the dust collector included? Which software is supplied, which file formats does it read, and is the licence perpetual? What is the laser safety class, and does it satisfy your local rules? Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series is stated to be Laser safety Class I to IEC 60825-1:2014, and CE, UL and CSA compliant.
- Factory-direct price for the exact work area and laser power.
- Crating, export packing and freight with Incoterms stated.
- Unloading and rigging, which matters on the heavier beds.
- Chiller or water cooling unit, and the dust extraction unit.
- Installation, alignment and the power and air connections needed.
- Commissioning on your own glass, with your own patterns.
- Operator training on the software as well as the machine.
- Spare parts, including optics, and warranty terms on the laser source.
- Software licences and the file formats supported.
Lead times, installation and running costs
Small marking and internal engraving machines are close to standard products and ship quickly. Large-bed engraving machines and multi-head marking lines are built to order, and a bird-friendly marking machine with a 10340 × 8000 mm footprint is a building decision as much as a machine decision.
Installation needs a level floor, stable power, clean compressed air, cooling water and extraction ducting. Ambient dust matters more than most buyers expect, because dust on the surface changes how the beam couples into the glass.
Running cost is the strongest argument for laser work. Several machines here are stated to need no consumables at all, including Green Laser Sandblasting & Drilling Machine and Laser Marking Machine, and Picosecond Glass Cutting & Splitting Machine (Single/Dual Station) is stated to produce no powder and no waste water. Against a sandblasting booth or a diamond drill, that removes grit, wheels and water treatment from the budget.
Power draw is modest for the class: 7.0 kW on Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine UT100 and 8.5 kW on Laser Drilling Machine. Maintenance is optics, filters, cooling water and guides. Machines with independent cooling and dust removal per laser, as on Bird-Friendly Laser Marking Machine, hold accuracy longer in large-format production.
Mistakes buyers make
Five errors show up in most laser purchases.
- Buying watts instead of process. A 200 W fiber machine will not do what a picosecond machine does, and a cold UV source will not frost as fast as fiber.
- Sizing the bed for the largest sheet you have ever seen. Bed size drives price, footprint and weight, and most decorative and shower work fits a small or medium bed.
- Ignoring extraction and cooling. Frosting and coating removal make debris, and if the dust collector and chiller are not in the quote, they are still in your budget.
- Forgetting the software and file formats. If the machine cannot read the files your designers send, someone redraws every job.
- Skipping the laser safety class and local approval. Class, guarding and interlocks decide where the machine can stand and who can stand near it.
Machines on GlassMachines.net
The category covers 24 machines from 6 manufacturers. Eight of them show the range, grouped by the job they do.
- Large-bed engraving and drilling. Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine V3 is the top of the fiber line, reaching 3000 × 6000 mm with dual-zone water cooling and tracking suction with pulse-jet dust collection. Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine UT100 is the compact version, from 1000 × 1000 mm, on a 7.0 kW draw for tighter shops.
- Cold processing. Green Laser Sandblasting & Drilling Machine uses a 60 W green laser and is stated to work without edge breakage, with no consumables. Picosecond Glass Cutting & Splitting Machine (Single/Dual Station) cuts 0.03 to 25 mm glass at up to 500 mm/s, holding plus or minus 0.01 mm with chipping of 5 microns or less.
- Bird-friendly marking. Bird-Friendly Laser Marking Machine marks a 3000 × 4000 mm sheet at 35 W without damaging the coatings, on all-Yaskawa servos with independent cooling and dust removal per laser. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series scales the same job by head count, from 9 m2/h on the Standard to 86 m2/h on the 12-marker Expert.
- Coating removal and cutting. Orion Laser Tech NV Spider Series handles edge deletion and surface decoating up to 3300 x 6000 mm with as many as 5 lasers. Orion Laser Tech NV Orca Series cuts, with optional cleaving, at a stated path accuracy of plus or minus 5 micron in 850 and 1800 sizes.
Specs to compare, in one list
- Work area
- It sets the price class, the footprint and the weight, so buy for the sheet you actually process.
- Laser source type
- Fiber, green, UV, picosecond and infrared do different jobs, and no setting turns one into another.
- Laser power
- More watts means faster frosting and drilling, but marking work wants a low, controlled figure instead.
- Accuracy
- Hole position and cut path tolerance decide whether the part fits the frame, and they vary widely by process.
- Glass thickness range
- Cutting and splitting ranges are far wider than marking ranges, so check the range against your thinnest and thickest work.
- Cooling and dust extraction
- Both keep accuracy stable, and both are often quoted as options rather than included.
- Software and file formats
- If the machine cannot read your drawing files, every job needs redrawing before it can run.
Questions buyers ask
How much does a laser glass processing machine cost?
It depends on work area, laser source, laser power, the number of heads and whether cooling and extraction are included, so no list price is useful. A small marking module and a 3000 × 6000 mm engraving bed are different investments. Send your glass sizes, the processes you need and your target output, then request pricing.
Can a laser replace a sandblasting booth?
For frosting and decorative work it usually can. These machines produce sandblasting effects with the beam alone, and several are stated to need no consumables, so there is no grit, no stencil and no wash stage. Picosecond Glass Cutting & Splitting Machine (Single/Dual Station) is stated to run with no powder and no waste water. Patterns come from a drawing file, so changing a design costs nothing.
What is the difference between fiber, green, UV and picosecond lasers on glass?
Fiber sources are the general-purpose choice for frosting, coating removal and drilling, at 120 to 200 W on the machines here. Green and UV sources work cold, so Green Laser Sandblasting & Drilling Machine is stated to avoid edge breakage and UV Laser Sandblasting Machine suits fine detail. Picosecond sources are ultrafast and are used to cut and split rather than to mark.
Does laser marking weaken the glass or damage a coating?
The manufacturers address both points directly. Orion Laser Tech NV Harrier Series is stated to have no impact on glass strength to EN1288-3, and its specification lists tempered glass as standard with glass strength after marking rated excellent. Bird-Friendly Laser Marking Machine marks the outer surface without damaging the coatings beneath, and processes Low-E film placed upward without damage.
Can a laser drill holes without chipping the glass?
That is the main reason plants buy one. In-line Laser Drilling Machine drills with no contact, so there are no burrs and no cracks at the hole, at plus or minus 3 micron. HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. Glass Laser Drilling Machine uses a MOPA pulsed source without water, leaving clean hole walls at 0.1mm precision, and is stated to be 5 to 10 times faster than traditional CNC machining.
Can these machines be built into a production line?
Several can. In-line Laser Drilling Machine is designed to link into a line, Laser Drilling & Cutout Machine has automatic transmission and intelligent positioning for the same purpose, and Vertical Laser Engraving & Drilling Machine connects into a line while standing the glass upright. HuNan Create E-commerce Co., Ltd. Glass Laser Continuous Drilling Machine can be configured with robot arms, a conveyor and a CCD vision system for a fully automatic drilling line.
